Wits end with the cat attacking me, any new strategies out there?

I adopted an adolescent kitten (estimated 7 to 8 mths. old and weighs 9.5 lbs) from a rescue org. about 18 days ago, and the first couple of days things were great; he was affectionate, appropriately playful and trustworthy. Then he began attacking my feet and lower body. I thought it was just kitten behavior and I would shout, clap and shoo him away, but it kept happening and got more intense (i.e. he would leap and try to climb me like a tree). I talked to my vet when I brought him in for his first check up 10 days after I adopted him, and my vet said to try a spray bottle with water, and then to throw a toy so he had something it is appropriate to attack instead of me. Then the cat started biting and scratching me while I was sleeping and obviously didn't have the spray bottle. I try to spend time with him playing to drain his energy and teach him what he's allowed to bite, but it just keeps getting worse and I do not trust him. It has further escalated to the point where I was sitting in a chair and the cat climbed on the back of it bear-hugged my head, brought his face to mine, and tried to bite my eye. Displacing energy/attacks to toys, spraying with water, shouting no and clapping to shoo are no longer effective. If anyone has more suggestions that would be appreciated, or I may have to bring him back.
